This drawing was done a couple of years ago, a germ of an idea that got shelved for a while. I decided that I would work on this idea for the Trapani exhibition. To make a pair of shoes that had a corporeal quality..to anthropomorphise the shoes. The idea was inspired by Bronzino's allegory for cupid and venus, which has a strange figure of a young girl who is in the backgrround of the painting, who has animal feet and a tail. The painting is about lust and desire and so I had the idea to use the stilletto shoe as a symbol of this lust and desire.

I decided to use a male shoe and a female shoe to act the characters of cupid and venus from the bronzino painting. Here the male shoe has been covered in mod-roc to make a mould of the shoe.

Here is the mod roc mould of the female shoe. This is the 'upper' of the shoe, the heel and sole of the shoe will be done seperately. Here I have painted a few layers of moulding latex to the inside of the mould. This is a similar process that I used to make my 'wounded object' and 'sex-object', painting the latex on a layer at a time. I have used clear latex for the first few layers. Latex dries eventually to a yellowish, old-skin colour. If the layers are painted too thick then this effect is ruined, there will be blobs of latex which cannot dry properly, that are trapped between skins of dried latex. The surface dries the quickest and so the trapped latex doesnt get a chance to air dry.

After a few layers of clear latex, i add a couple of layers of coloured latex. The idea is that this flesh colour shows through the transparent yellowy layers. This is a trial and error process and can sometimes take a few attempts to get the desired effect. The surface is hidden against the face of the mould and so it is always a suprise or shock when taken out of the mould! I still need to add more layers of latex to build up the right thicness or the object would be too flimsy. Building up the layers and drying in between layers is a slow process.

I thought I would upload the bronzino painting I mentioned, in case some of you are not familiar with it. What attracted me to this painting is the pale flesh tones against the silky blue background. Also the strange hybrid form of the child figure in the background, who has animal feet and a tail. Also the prominence of feet in the painting!! so this is what inspired my direction for the Trapani project. I have had the idea to translate this painting using shoes as the charecters for a while and so now is my chance to put this into action.

Side tracked from my plan here just a bit! The breast of Venus is also a prominent feature in the painting and so suddenly had the idea to place the breast in the shoe. As venus is also one of the main charecters of the painting I thought she deserved more attention than the animal feet child figure. Have the idea to create all the charecters of the painting as shoes, but maybe I will do cupid and venus first , and then see what developes.

Another angle of the clay breast in the shoe. I have moulded a clay breast with the idea of taking a latex mould from this.

I painted latex onto a piece of leather to get a skin texture. The latex skin was then applied over a shoe

The latex breast placed on the skin shoe.

The breast has been attached and the venus shoe placed on blue silk.

The finished Venus shoe...the final touch was to add sme red rose petals. One piece finished. Now I need to finish the male Cupid shoe which needs to interact with venus. The two pieces (Venus and Cupid) are what I intend to show at Trapani.
