My work is concerned with the Thoroughbred Racehorse and the way the breed over the years has been aestheticised and manipulated. The Thoroughbred is no longer a natural animal but exists as a racing machine, a product in a multibillion dollar industry. I play on the presentation of these animals. I am also interested in the similarities between the structure of the modern day stud and the ancient Harems of the Far East; stallions, mares and geldings; eunuchs and odalisques. Victorian Portrait photography influenced this work as well as chiarscuro in classical painting. Thoroughly-Bred, being 7ft by 6ft creates a presence and hints at grand portraiture.

Hi Jean,
I worked with photography because I liked its directness. A painting becomes something else again-especially equestrian paintings. Contemporary Equestrian paintings reference a huge history of equestrian art. I love painting, however, I only have a few paintings from this series. The Camera captured everything I was trying to portray and i enjoyed experimenting with the dramatic lighting. I hope to upload some more from this series aswel as some of my painted work- aimee.
Odalisque
Odalisque explores female infatuation with the horse. I am interested in the similarities between the structure of the modern day stud and the ancient Harems of the Far East; stallions, mares and geldings; eunuchs and odalisques. The striking imagery in the photographic work of Richard Prince informed this piece as well as strong use of chiarscuro and gold to suggest decadence. This piece is also suggestive of old fashioned film posters.

A good buddy of mine is/was a major enthusiast of the the thoroughbred horse. His enthusiasm, so fully genuinely passionate caused me a mere purveyor in the graphic arts to employ my skills and help him produce a quarterly magazine in Canada based on the high standards of the British Racehorse. It was a fairly significant effort seeing as no one had any loot but of course innevitably a failure due to lack of support of the establishment. I did during that time gain an appreciation of the the the modern thoroughbred. My question to you is what are you trying to do in your work is it to record the magnificance of the beast although other artists both painters and photographers have done their best to do so and are expert in catching the nuanced stance, etc.
Let us say the thoroughbred horse is already a work of human art, a human constuct, in of itself art I therefore in all humility ask you what you try to achieve in your work.
I would most appreciate a response.
